Phillipe tapped his fingers on the steering wheel as nerves churned in his stomach. He just hoped the back exit was free from reporters and she made it to the car without being seen.

The call from William this morning had been particularly disconcerting.

The family was angry. He got that, but he also knew without a doubt that Annie hadn’t contacted the press and he’d told William so. Hell, he’d been with her until nearly midnight, and she had no desire to cause any problems for the family. This had to have come from someone else, but they could think about that later. Right now he was getting her out of Paris and away from the press. That was his only concern.

A glimpse in his rearview mirror showed her hurrying toward his car. He flipped the locks and got out, reaching for her bag as she drew near. “Get in. I’ll put this in the back.”

She did what he said, not questioning anything. He put the bag in the back seat next to his own while she slipped into the passenger seat. He got back in and they fastened their seat belts, and then he wordlessly pulled away from the curb.

A few minutes later they had cleared the area and he let out a breath, looked over at her, and smiled. “So. Good morning.”

She started to laugh, which told him she was either stressed or she appreciated the absurdity in the morning’s events. He hoped it was the latter.

“Just another quiet Saturday.” She shrugged, then leaned her head back against the seat. “I don’t know what happened. I woke up this morning and my phone had blown up.”

“I woke to a rather irate call from William,” Phillipe admitted. There was no use sugarcoating anything. “The family is furious. The general consensus is that you waited until the launch to make as big a splash as possible.”

“That’s ridiculous! I wasn’t even going to go to the launch!” Annie shook her head. “I can’t imagine who could have leaked it.”

“I believe you, and I told William so,” Phillipe assured her. “However, the list of people who know is very small, so I understand why they automatically suspect you leaked the story even if I know it’s impossible. I don’t care about that. I care about you being in the line of fire from the press.” He made a gesture at the interior of his car. “It was the best I could do on short notice.”

Annie was silent for a few minutes as he navigated his way toward the A6. They were in for a day of driving, but he couldn’t think of anywhere better to take her than home. Not because he had any burning urge to visit, though seeing his parents was long overdue, but he remembered her saying she had never been to the south of France. It was too beautiful for her to miss, and if she really meant to go back to England...

A strange emptiness filled him at the very thought.
